主要研究功能性弹性体材料的设计与合成、性能分析及其在能源等领域的应用。至今已发表SCI学术论文100余篇, 以通讯作者或者第一作者在Nat. Commun. 、Matter、Angew. Chem.、CCS Chem., Macromolecules、Adv. Energy Mater.、ACS Energy Lett.、Adv. Funct. Mater.、Mater Today等国际知名期刊发表学术论文60余篇,撰写著作章节3部,获得授权国际发明专利9项。其主持的自修复弹性密封胶项目凭借其产业价值获得2021年度科技界奥斯卡之称的 R&D 100 Award。此外,曹鹏飞教授还获得美国化学会2021年高分子杰出青年研究奖(ACS-PMSE Young-Investigator Award),2023年材料科学之星(ACS-Rising Star in Materials Science)。
